▣ It's on! Gerald 'Gee' Javier gets back into the ring

Friday, February 24th marks the day it begins. One man’s quest to develop into the greatest flyweight contender the UFC has ever seen. Developing his hands and grappling over the years, Gerald Javier was well known on the local amateur New Jersey Muay Thai scene, opponents often would shy away from stepping into the ring with ‘lil bomb.’ However, his tutelage never helped him expand to find himself outside of the New Jersey local fight scene, little was known of Javier. After a recent shift in training camps, moving from KRU Muay Thai in Bergenfield, NJ where he got a great start to his career to the camp at EDGE Hoboken, Javier has found the opportunity to expand his training partners and finally open him up to the competition that he has been searching for.

Learning and perfecting his wrestling for MMA under head coach David Esposito and perfecting his Jiu Jitsu under David Branch has found the extra tools the native New Jersey MMA Fighter needs to break into the upper echelons of the fight game. Training with NJMMA and EDGE Bellator fighter Claudio Ledesma, Wreslting with 125lb NCAA Div 1 Wrestler, Brandon Kinney, and grappling with UFC Veteran Phillipe Nover has lead Javier to feel the confidence he needs to step back into the cage.

▣ Clean up your Diet

Lately a number of athletes have been asking me questions about how to create a proper diet, how to diet for tournaments and weight cuts and how to lean out.  In essence the inquiries have been coming in because you want to start eating healthier.  I mean, you're training 4-5 days a week- why not supplement it with correct eating to see your results go through the roof?

My former team mate and Michigan Wolverine owns and operates Crossfit810 over in Flint, Michigan and has written a blog series on eating "normal".  The premise is very simple actually, if something is natural and grows in nature- it likely is good for you.  If something is processed or laden with preservatives and dyes, packaged heavily- it likely is bad for you...fitting right?

Joe Degain has done a great job of transitioning the knowledge he learned while competing in college wrestling into a successful crossfit business... Crossfit workouts are essentially college athletic workouts for wrestling and football turned public..  For you grappling enthusiasts there is no better place to tailor your diet from than this man. This will be the first of a multipart series in which we will help you develop your diet to fit your athletic needs.

▣ Frankie Edgar: Heart to the Top

In what seems to be a unique overture of fights, Frankie Edgar ( www.frankieedgar.com ) has not only proven to be the UFC champion, but that he has something special to reach the top. The guy has heart.  For the second consecutive fight after only the first round he found himself almost without his UFC title belt.  A powerful Gray Maynard unleashed some devastating right hooks and uppercuts on Frankie and nearly dropped the UFC champion to the mat for good.  But with every hard blow Frankie willfully pushed through the MMA fight to regain his control and mental awarness. Squeeking through the first round and into the second on his mental toughness.

Entering the second round is where Frankie started to gain his stride, moving his feet and head well he created just enough offense of his own to keep Maynard and his devastating strikes at bay.  The momentum was shifting.

Frankie Edgar UFC Champ trains at Edge Hoboken New Jersey MMA

Frankie Edgar walks away from a stunned Gray Maynard as he celebrates his UFC title defense.

In the third Frankie started to believe in something he knew all too well, something he trains regularly with Edge Owner and MMA and wrestling coach Dave Esposito, Wrestling. Frankie started to open up his single leg shots, slipping underneath the rights of Maynard and into one, two, three single leg attempts.  While not taking Maynard down, the attempts may have seemed in vain to a regular observer of the fight. However, leg attacks were a vital part of Frankies strategy. Attack the legs to keep Maynard honest so he couldn't continue to throw haymakers and use his size and weight advantage in the standup department.  What this allowed Frankie to do was slow Maynard's striking and keep him thinking that he couldn't open up as much with his combos or Frankie was sure to take him down.  From this, Edgar began to pick apart a stationary and seemingly frozen Maynard with his jab and then quick combos ending by stepping out of the pocket.  When Maynard would enter the pocket and look to land a combination Edgar would go underneath and push for the single leg. Soon Maynard was hesitant to step in and look for his combinations as he knew Frankie could get in on his legs.

Heart allowed Frankie Edgar to get through the first round of both his title defenses against Gray Maynard, who coincidentally holds the only loss on Frankies MMA record (a 2008 non-title fight). Without that heart, Frankie may have found himself without his belt.  He continued strong into the second and third rounds where he got his game plan in motion and outwrestled who many consider the better wrestler.  Frankie finished strong with a KO in the fourth.  Congrats Champ, see you at the Edge in November for your seminar and night out in Hoboken!

▣ Hard Starting: Claudio Ledesma's Fight Camp

In early September Claudio was reeling of a couple weeks of light, but technical training.  Not pushing his body and wanting to focus on technique, uncertain of when he would be taking his next MMA fight.  Practicing his Jiu Jitsu, improving his wrestling, and tightening up his striking were his main focus. Then the call came, he got an offer he felt he couldn't refuse, to fight in Bellator 54.  The start of reaching a lifelong training goal, the chance to compete in one of Mixed Martial Arts biggest arenas, this time in his home state of New Jersey.  MMA had been his passion, this was his chance to grow a true tale for father to pass to son, he felt he had made it.  Time to prepare.

Step into camp. Ladesmas fight camp began with what many east coasters would like to call Floodicane Irene.  Although the storm itself didn't present to much wind damage- the floods that followed swallowed up many homes in New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, and Vermont. The day fight camp was scheduled to begin I recieved a text from Claudio "I probably can't make training tonight...my living room is under 7 feet of water." And with that it began. Claudio delayed the start of his training by four days, moved his wife and son to a rental unit while their house was assesed and repaired in the meantime.  The outcome? Claudio is looking at over a year before the up and coming New Jersey MMA fighter can return to the house he once called home.

What shown quickly about Claudio and his work ethic, was that throughout the loss of his house during Hurricane Irene- he was always calm and looking to train.  He never seemed like someone who had just lost his house, and essentially everything in it. Unbelievable is his attitude on life and towards training.

▣ Phillipe Nover making a comeback?

Phillipe Nover Back in Action: Muay Thai New Jersey MMA

On June 10th, Phillipe Nover entered the ring for the first time in over a year.  What began as a promising career for the young mixed martial artist was abruptly stopped with the fracture of several vertibrae in his upper back; Nover made the decision to announce an early retirement from MMA with a high level career in Nursing already on his plate.  But, alas the itch to compete was still within Nover's blood, and he felt a burning desire to win bouts.  Training with boxing and Muay Thai coach Jason Strout at Church Street Boxing Nover was looking to start his climb back into contention.  Nover decided that his best segue back into Mixed Martial Arts was to pick up a Muay Thai fight in the Friday Night Fights promotion in New York.  Phil is an Edge Hoboken Fight Team Athlete and held to his promise to himself of making a strong comeback into MMA with a first round KO of Anthony Ford just over a minute in.  Where does the road to MMA take Phil next?  Is he looking to get back in the Cage and pick up where he left off?  If I had to make guess work out of this, I would say Phil isn't training Wrestling as well as Bjj to stick to only the standup game.

▣ UFC Matt Brown to fight Jon Howard-

From coast to coast Matt Brown has been training where he feels he can gain the best advantage he can, migrating from Seattle then home to Columbus Matt has found himself on the east coast for the past two weeks.  Knowing fair well that his striking is the strongest part of his game Brown decided to visit NYC and train his grappling.  Matt was in preparation for his fight with Rich Attonito when the bout was switched to the Main Card UFC fight with Jon Howard.  Brown decided the best place in the Manhattan area to work on his grappling and take downs in the weeks prior to his fight?  Edge Hoboken.  Many of our students got the chance to watch Matt train just a few days prior to taking the ring in the big stage.  Look for Matt to come out swinging on Saturday.
